School is back in session in many parts of the country and once again we’ll see regular news reports of students being shot, stabbed, beaten and robbed on their way to and from school. Unless your child rides a school bus, campus officials can’t guarantee a student’s safety.
It’s up to us as parents, working with the schools, law enforcement, businesses and other neighborhood residents to create safe passages between home and school.
Whenever possible, parents should walk their children to and from bus stops and/or school grounds. You can even take turns with other parents in the neighborhood. But make sure there is always be an adult present with the children.
Police can help with extra patrols both in the 30 minutes before and after the school day. Work with your school’s officials to ask for this. If that doesn’t get it done, escalate your request to your local representative on the city council or county commission.
Many businesses along major school routes are happy to assist. Ask those willing to do so to post a Safe Passages sticker on their front door so students know that is a safe haven in an emergency. Also, ask if the business would be willing to have an employee stand on the sidewalk as the kids pass each morning and afternoon. And be sure to contact your local neighborhood watch groups and ask them to provide volunteers to do the same.
Criminals, gangs and bullies don’t generally operate when they know they are being watched. Having visible, observant adults along school routes will increase your child’s chances of arriving at school and home unharmed.
