5 Uses Of Technology To Save Energy

On earth day we were reminded of how fragile our planet is. Whether you believe in global warming or not, it seems things are out of whack. The earth is parched and the weather is warmer than ever. And while that may not be such a bad thing, it is. Lakes are drying, icebergs are melting, rubbish is clogging everything and some say oil is peaking. It seems grim, but of course humans are resilient. So we are working on fixing it.

The best way to start fixing is with your own consumption.

#1 Thermostats: A programmable thermostat is best. In the winter turn down the heat. 68 opposed to 70 is more efficient. 64 when you go to bed is even better. Having humidifiers with a humidity of 35-40 feels nice and warm. In the summer use air-conditioning only when you need it and keep it at 74-76. Use it just enough to keep the humidity down for healthy breathing and good sleeping.

#2 Automate lighting: Lights can go on timers that can be programmed individually at the light or via a home automation dashboard online or on a local tablet.

#3 Dimmers: Every light in my house is on a dimmer. Some parts of my home are dark during the day but only need enough light to efficiently perform certain tasks. At night bright lights can be to harsh. Dimmers save energy.

#4 Use LED bulbs: LED is “Light Emitting Diode” and is a bit more expensive but save a tremendous amount of energy. Spend the money now, save lots over time.

#5 Use Occupancy/vacancy (OV) sensors: Hotels know how to cut costs by installing motion sensors in rooms to turn off TVs, power and lights when no one is there.  OV sensors are the smartest way to save energy to the minute.
